Healthy urban forests promote healthy futures

Healthy urban forests promote healthy futures

Urban foresters are in the business of creating happiness. In the 2015 Schaffer Lectureship, Dr Cecil Konijnendijk explores the roots of urban forestry and the growing evidence of its importance to healthy, sustainable, and livable cities. Dr Konijnendijk explores the cross disciplinary skills urban foresters need to meet the challenges of future cities in what he describes as “Urban Forestry 2.0”.

Ever since my first day working at Canfor, I knew it was going to be a rewarding experience. Canfor provided me with orientation and training before I started my job. I enjoyed working in the bush with people who have the same passion for forestry. This picture was taken in a helicopter on a day my crew flew into a cutblock to do some layout.

My work term at Western Forest Products has been exciting, fun, and challenging at the same time. I have been provided with a variety of tasks from analyzing a packaging unit to sampling and testing the moisture content and size of dust particles created during the log breakdown process.

This was my first co-op work term and I learned a lot from this experience. My skills using GPS and navigation have improved significantly, as well as practical exposure to the various different silviculture surveys used in the industry today.

Seagull populations halved since 1980s

Seagull populations halved since 1980s

The number of seagulls in the Strait of Georgia is down by 50 per cent from the 1980s. Dr Peter Arcesse say the decline reflects changes in the availability of food.

Arcesse and other researchers collected 100 years of data on population numbers of Glaucous-winged Gulls, the most common seagull species found in the Lower Mainland, Victoria, Nanaimo and elsewhere in the region.
