Applications are invited for the position of the Head of the Forest and Conservation Sciences Department at The University of British Columbia. The Forest and Conservation Sciences Department – one of three Departments within the Faculty of Forestry – comprises 25 faculty members, including 5 joint appointments, 1 endowed Chair, 7 staff positions, and a current complement of 76 graduate students. The Faculty of Forestry offers three undergraduate programs, two of which are jointly overseen by the Departments of Forest and Conservation Sciences and Forest Resources Management.
Research and teaching in the Department focuses on the forest as a biological system, addressing questions about how that system functions (at spatial scales from the molecular to landscapes) and how it can be managed to yield desirable goods and services.
The Head is responsible for the overall administration of the Department (including faculty leadership and development, strategic planning, staffing and budgeting) and also serves on the Faculty’s Senior Management Team. The Head is expected to (a) ensure that courses are suitably staffed, (b) take an active role in curriculum and program review, (c) foster interaction among faculty members, (d) mentor members of the Department, (e) conduct annual evaluations of each faculty member in the Department and (f) review all grant applications from Department members with the aim of both improving them and finding opportunities for collaboration, and (g) serve as the advocate for Department members within the Faculty and the University. The Department Head is also responsible for administering University policies with respect to sexual harassment, conflict of interest, and other matters. As a member of the Department, the Head will be expected to maintain an active research program in any field related to forest and conservation sciences, supervise graduate students and otherwise contribute to the Department’s teaching programs.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in research, teaching, leadership and management skills. The ability to lead and motivate an outstanding department is a key prerequisite for this position. This position is open to internal applicants at the rank of Professor with tenure.
Applicants should submit a letter stating their interests and qualifications, a curriculum vitae including identification of three or more key publications or reports, and the names and contact information for three or more referees. Salary will commensurate with qualifications and experience. Starting date for the position will be January 1, 2017 – or as soon thereafter as a suitable candidate is found.
