Within the first couple weeks working with SNAP (Surrey’s Natural Areas Partnership) I had already learned so much thanks to the Green Timbers Heritage Society, the city of Surrey and the UBC Faculty of Forestry Co-op Program for getting me to this position. I learned about the importance of urban natural areas in our cities and all about invasive plant removal, the addition of tree wells around the base of urban trees for protection and much more.

I spent this summer, my first Co-op work term, as an intern for Icelandic Forest Research. As a research assistant, I have had the opportunity to engage in various projects and learn from many different scientists. These projects included measuring a progeny trial of poplar trees, traveling for the Icelandic Forest Inventory, and assessing birch for a study on insect damage.

My second and third co-op work terms are spread across two consecutive four month terms with Interfor, based out of their office in Sechelt, BC. My job has had me assisting mostly with cut-block layout and road location/design both in the field and the office. I’ve been able to learn and improve on a multitude of technical skills like compassing and GPS work, but the work experience as a whole has been the major benefit for me.

My first Co-op work term was with the Collaborative for Advanced Landscape Planning (or CALP) at UBC. I was fortunate enough to work in an interdisciplinary and supportive environment where there was something new for me to learn every day. My primary task was to work on a project called The Citizen’s Coolkit (in short the Coolkit), which for me was the amalgamation of everything I had wanted in a co-op placement.

On my second co-op work term through the department of Wood Science, I took part in a new project at FP Innovations focused on the development of wood products manufactured from underutilized wood waste, primarily from local demolition materials. The project was based in Vancouver, where annually 450 000 tons of waste wood material is either sent to the landfill or underutilized. With the growing number of demolitions in Vancouver I was inspired to be part of this timely and important initiative.
