Research Associate – Department of Forest Resources Management (Deadline: September 15, 2017)

The Department of Forest Resources Management, UBC-Vancouver Campus seeks a Research Associate to develop tools, methods and datasets for forest attribute modelling using remote sensing data.

This research associate (RA) will be responsible for undertaking research within the Assessment of Wood Attributes using Remote Sensing (AWARE) project, under the supervision of Dr. Nicholas Coops. The objective of research is to develop new tools, methods and datasets for processing three dimensional point clouds for a range of forestry attribute across multiple sites in Canada, as well as communicate these results to industry partners.

Responsibilities include:

  1. develop tools that will include new algorithms, metrics, models, and approaches for predicting forest attribute from three dimensional remotely sensed data;
  2. develop best-practices guides to inform and enable forest practitioners interested in using these tools and approaches to understand and use in their management and operations;
  3. prepare demonstration datasets and applications examples of those tools;
  4. prepare manuscripts for publication in high quality peer reviewed journals.

Qualifications required

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in forestry or related field and over 4 years postdoctoral research experience in the fields of LIDAR data processing and image-based point cloud data processing, using three dimensional data for modelling forest stand attributes, as well as expertise in remote sensing and geospatial analysis. Candidates should have a good knowledge of forest growth modelling, forest productivity and forest growth and yield based on remote sensing data as well as demonstrated expertise in processing large databases and datasets using efficient, multi-core routines. Candidates should have a strong publication record and have good knowledge of statistical modelling including use of machine learning approaches. The candidate should be highly skilled in statistical software such as R. Other requirements for successful applicants include excellent oral communication skills, the ability to work in a dynamic research team, and the ability to work on a project with defined milestones and timelines.
