Malcolm Knapp Research Forest

This summer I have been working as a research assistant, with the Simard lab, in the Malcolm Knapp research forest at Maple Ridge. I work with a graduate student who is interested in below ground and above ground forest ecology, and how human activities may impact this ecosystem. Her project involves monitoring three species of trees over multiple years to see how they preform given warming and nitrogen stressors. I have been learning so much about the nuances of field research, and what it actually takes to pull off a complex ecological field trial. It has been very interesting learning about the research process, and about the ecology of coastal BC. Each day is a bit of a different experience, and I always manage to learn something new!
