FOREST SCIENCES DEPARTMENT
FACULTY OF FORESTRY
UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA
Instructor1 in Natural Resources Conservation
We invite applications for an instructor (tenure track) to be involved in the teaching, coordination, and development of undergraduate and graduate courses in the Natural Resources Conservation (NRC) Program.
At the undergraduate level, the instructor will lead, coordinate and co-instruct the award winning course “Integrated Field School” (CONS 451 – 15 credits). This capstone course is the only course students in the Science & Management Major take in the fall term of their 4th year. It integrates natural sciences, social sciences, and management issues related to the conservation of natural resources. The course involves extended field trips as well as formal classroom time. The course is divided into three, 4-week modules each focusing on a different ecosystem type (alpine, grassland, aquatic) and each facilitated by faculty members. The course presently has ~30 students but continues to grow. The individual will also teach and coordinate the course “Conservation Science and Sustainability” (CONS 330 – 3 credits), which teaches the fundamental concepts in conservation science and explores different philosophies, perspectives and disciplines used in setting priorities for management of biodiversity at all scales. This course normally has 50 students but the expectation is for the instructor to revamp the curriculum and prerequisites and grow the course to 250+ students and make it a core contribution to the new campus-wide UBC sustainability teaching initiatives.
At the graduate level, the instructor will take a lead role in the development and delivery of summer semester resource conservation courses intended for Canadian and international forest professionals. This may include, but will not be restricted to, a graduate field school modeled after CONS 451 to serve eventually as a focal and primary field experience for a broader course-based MSc program in NRC. Lastly, the instructor will assist in the mentoring and advising of students in the graduate and undergraduate NRC programs.
The instructor must have a PhD in an appropriate field with at least 3 years of relevant teaching experience in field and classroom courses. The individual must have experience in curriculum development, field and data analysis skills, and demonstrated excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. A familiarity with conservation issues in British Columbia is essential.
The appointment will start on May 1, 2012 though later start dates can be negotiated. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
