The Faculty of Forestry has three Research Forests where students can enhance their classroom learning with field studies.
These are working forests, where students and faculty can study in an outdoor setting. Fish and wildlife, silviculture, forest harvesting, forest ecology, forest management, and resource management figure prominently in these field studies.
The Alex Fraser Research Forest is located near Williams Lake, providing students with an opportunity to experience forests and forestry work in the interior of the province. Gavin Lake camp on the edge of the Fraser Forest is also a great place for residential field courses.
The Malcolm Knapp Research Forest is located near Maple Ridge, and is close enough to campus for students to visit for field trips or project work. Loon Lake camp in the heart of the Knapp Forest is a wonderful setting for residential field courses. Loon lake is the home of Camp Goodtimes, the Canadian Cancer Society's special camp for kids with a history of cancer.
The Aleza Lake Research Forest is located near Prince George, and is jointly managed by UBC and UNBC. This 9,000 hectare research facility and working forest is the site of some of the oldest forestry experiments British Columbia's interior.
When the students can't go to the forests, we like to bring the Research Forests to the students. Studies, information, and plans from the Research Forests show up frequently in course work on campus.
