Tenure Track Assistant Professor Position


The Faculty of Forestry (Department of Wood Science) and the Faculty of Applied Science (Department of Civil Engineering and School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture) at the University of British Columbia are seeking candidates for an endowed Associate Chair in Wood Building Design and Construction at the rank of Assistant Professor.  Candidates must have demonstrated the clear potential to develop excellence in research, teaching and technology transfer in the design and construction of wood-based structures.

The Associate Chair holder will be a major contributor to a multidisciplinary team addressing all aspects of the design and construction of wood-based buildings.  The Associate Chair holder will be expected to specialize in timber structures and contribute expertise to assist a team developing the holistic designs of timber structures by considering the interactions among the structural, architectural, building physics, energy efficiency, environmental and green building requirements.

The successful candidate will be expected to hold a Bachelors degree in civil engineering and a Ph.D. in a related field. Candidates with a post-graduate degree, relevant international experience, and proven excellence or outstanding research potential in Structural Engineering or Building Science as well as a commitment to quality teaching are encouraged to apply.  Applicants should either have, or be eligible to register with, the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia. Registration is required within four years of appointment. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in undergraduate and graduate education, develop a personal research program and collaborate with members of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Wood Science. The successful candidate will also be required to interact with the wood products industry and the design community to integrate and further develop expertise in this area.  This is a rare opportunity to contribute to a globally significant program at a leading North American university.

This tenure-track position will be a joint appointment between the Faculties of Forestry and Applied Science.  The appointment will be effective 1 July 2010, but an alternative date may be arranged.  Salary and Academic Rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.  Interested candidates should address their enquiries to:
