ATLAS Databases

ATLAS databases consist of two basic elements: a GIS map and growth and yield curves. The GIS map contains the spatial information about where all harvest units and stands are located, as well as links to a database with the stand characteristics. Yield curves predict the merchantable volume of a stand as it ages through time. Each yield curve is connected to the forest polygons through stand types. Stand types are groupings of polygons with similar leading tree species, growth characteristics, and harvest methods. Stand types are also typically delineated by regeneration type, and usually include independent growth curves for each regeneration type (natural stands, managed stands, etc.).

The GIS database is usually generated from BC's forest cover maps. These maps are first overlaid with all the relevant administrative layers (tenure boundaries, landscape units, etc.) and resource layers (riparian buffer zones, deer winter ranges, etc.) to produce a resultant polygon map. The resultant polygons are then grouped in a blocking process to form viable harvesting units. Road locations can be added if an analysis of the transportation system is desired.

Notes:

The TFL03 data is an 'ATLAS-like' database, created by Hugh Hamilton Ltd. (North Vancouver) funded by Slocan Forest Products.

TFL 14 & TFL 23 are being reblocked and re-modelled in 2001 as part of the spatial analysis of the Kootenay Boundary Higher Level Plan, a joint government and industry project.

The TFL 14 database is a block map database, but hasn't been used for spatially explicit analysis through space and time.

The TFL 23 database is a computer generated blocking exercise, done by Timberline (Victoria) which is attempting to create a 20 Year Plan for the TFL.

The rest of the databases, being most of the available data in NFR, are from the ATLAS / SIMFOR Project.
