Criteria for Participating Organizations

Organizations that wish to participate in this program must fall within the following criteria:

1. Have experience taking in volunteers (i.e. a volunteers program already in place)

2. Provide the volunteer with 100 hours of volunteer time on projects that are directly related to natural sciences and provide the volunteer with work experience. For example, skill development in tasks such as:
- Working with wildlife
- Restoration (Streams/riparian zones, trails, removal of non-native species)
- Plant inventory

- Mapping (GIS and GPS)
- Campaigning
- Surveys (Fish and wildlife, biodiversity, etc.)
- Environmental education
- Skills associated with working for/running a non-profit organization.

3. Commit to supervision of the volunteer including:
- Filling out hour sheets
- Submitting a monthly summation of duties and hours to the NRVP
- Ensuring the safety of the volunteer
- Being on hand or easily reached if the volunteer has questions or requires assistance with a task
- Being approachable and open with volunteers.

4. Provide the volunteer with any necessary training required to fulfill the agreed upon position.

5. Be flexible around academic schedules and prior engagements of the volunteer.

6. Participating organizations will be asked to sign a placement agreement.

Eligibility Guidelines for Students

1. Must be returning to school the semester after the completion of the placement.

2. Must have valid BC Medical Coverage.

3. Students' studies must pertain to the natural sciences with an emphasis on conservation and the environment. This is a very broad field and positions are not limited to the scientific aspects of this field. Students that can show that the position will provide work experience in their field will be given priority.

4. Students will be asked to sign a placement agreement.

Traits desirable in the Volunteer

1. Dependable and committed to the placement.

2. Able to discuss problems with your supervisor. An open line of respectful communication will help your placement run smoothly and will maximize the amount of knowledge and training that you receive.

3. Respectful of the confidentiality of the organization.

4. Punctual and diligent about handing in time sheets.

5. Organized.

6. Reliable and mature when volunteering and when dealing with any conflicts.
