Beetle-Proofing Research in the East Kootenays
Is it possible to to "beetle proof" a 70 - 100 year old stand by thinning to 4 - 5m spacing?  A long term programme to reduce the susceptibility of mature lodgepole pine stands was set up  in the East Kootenay region of B.C. in 1992  after the widespread mountain pine beetle outbreak in the 1980's.  The objective was to meet landscape level management objectives and as part of this, age class 4 and 5 lodgepole pine stands were thinned to evaluate their ability to withstand future beetle attacks while preserving wildlife habitat and other management objectives.  See the 5 year evaluation report for a full account of this project. Includes PowerPoint slides.
