Spring Graduation – May 27, 2011 Graduation Cake
It’s that time of year again when another group of eager students cross the stage to receive their diplomas and we have a great opportunity for one lucky person to help welcome the students into the alumni community.

We are looking for an alumni representative to participate in the graduation ceremony at 11:00 am on Friday, May 27th. The perks of this role include:

  • The opportunity to meet the Dean, President Toope, and the Chancellor in Thea’s Lounge before being escorted to the stage of the Chan Centre where you will be seated during the ceremony.
  • Your name, degree, and company will be printed in the graduation brochure circulated throughout the 6 days of ceremonies.
  • You will receive a special invitation to attend the private Honorary Degree Recipient Reception at the President’s home.

Does this sound like something you’d be interested in? If so, please send an email to jenna.mccann@ubc.ca by April 18th.

WPP Students Fashion Furniture for Starbucks
If you happen to be out and about in Vancouver, looking for a good place to relax with a cup of coffee, why not visit the Starbucks located at Agronomy and East Mall on campus? While there, sit back and relax in the new furniture, designed and fabricated by our very own Wood Products Processing students and members of the Centre for Advanced Wood Processing (CAWP) team.

Starbucks approached CAWP with the remodelling project as part of the company’s efforts to reflect the character of local communities in the interior design of their stores. Much of the wood used in the design was salvaged from oak trees felled during construction on campus. Proceeds from the project will support the upkeep and maintenance of the CAWP high head teaching lab and its equipment.

We are always on the lookout for new partnerships just like this one. If your company has a project that could benefit from the expertise of the CAWP team while also providing learning opportunities for students, contact jenna.mccann@ubc.ca.

World Forestry DayTree Planting Ceremony
The rain couldn’t keep our hardy alumni away from this momentous occasion. The Faculty was pleased to welcome back alumni as well as special guests Mr Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources; Mr Liang Shugen, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Vancouver; and Mr Ashok Das, Consul General of India in Vancouver (all pictured to the right) who helped us commemorate this special day by planting a Davidia involucrata, commonly known as a handkerchief tree. This particular tree, of Asian origin, represents the strong linkages the Faculty has formed with partner institutions throughout Asia.

Should you be on campus later this spring, stop by the west side of the Forest Sciences Centre to see our newest addition in bloom.

3MT
Words were flying last month as our graduate students competed to concisely present their research to a panel of judges in just 3 minutes flat. MSc student, Carolina Chanis, whose work was entitled ‘Bigger bang for your bale’, was crowned the winner and is off to the UBC-wide competition later this month. Interested in her work? Contact jenna.mccann@ubc.ca.
