Con‘grad’ulations!
On Friday, May 27th, families, friends and faculty watched as 95 undergraduate Forestry students and 32 graduate students crossed the stage to become the newest batch of Forestry alumni. Way to go!
We look forward to welcoming this next generation of alumni to our Faculty events and encourage each and every one of you to get involved with us and with other alumni by taking advantage of opportunities such as the network available through the Forestry LinkedIn group, our reunion program and our mentoring and volunteer programs.
Photos from the graduation reception are available on the Forestry Alumni website but if you have others to share, please send them to jenna.mccann@ubc.ca.
Remember, don’t become lost in the woods! Interchange accounts expire soon after graduation so please send us your personal email accounts today so we can keep in touch.
Alumni Weekend
It was a busy final weekend of May as over 2000 visitors made the trek back to campus to celebrate Alumni Weekend. A special thank you of course goes out to all who attended the Faculty’s Alumni Weekend luncheon. Following a buffet lunch and presentation by the Dean, Forestry alumni helped welcome in the students who will make up the Forestry Class of 2015. A very eager, bright and young looking group indeed!
Photos from the lunch and welcome session are available on the Forestry Alumni website.
Young Alumni - Educate Your Palate – July 13, 2011 onwards
Past installments of The Next Step series have covered more traditional professional development topics, but this summer, the Alumni Office is doing something a little bit different. The Next Step: Educating Your Palate is a series of intimate social and culinary adventures.
Each evening will feature knowledgeable hosts and will focus on a particular beverage and food combination. Whether you’re a wine, whiskey or beer aficionado or you only have limited experience with these beverages, you will learn something new and meet like-minded recent grads. For more information or to register for the next event, visit http://www.alumni.ubc.ca/events/the-next-step.

Career Services
Did you know that UBC alumni have lifetime access to CareersOnline, where thousands of positions are posted by hundreds of different employers? A new search function has just been added to make the job search even easier for you as an alumnus.
Once you login to your account, under the job/volunteer postings tab, select ‘alumni’ under the ‘show me jobs for’ search filter and voila, a plethora of positions will appear on your screen. Happy hunting!
Forestry Mentoring Program
Calling all alumni – we need you!
When you were a student, do you remember wondering what the heck you could do with a Forestry degree in the real world? Would you be out in the field, working in an office, staying in Canada or moving across the globe? Well today’s students have those exact same questions and they would love to hear from one of the pros – that’s you!
By signing up for the mentoring program, you will be assigned a junior student and a senior student who will meet with you in person or communicate via email and phone, just a few times a year. It’s not a huge time commitment, but makes an amazing difference to our students. And from what we hear, our mentors really get a kick out of the program too.
We are looking for new members for September 2011. To sign up or learn more, please contact Jenna McCann at jenna.mccann@ubc.ca, who will put you in touch with the mentoring program coordinator.

Regional Adaptation to Climate Change Project

In a recent article, Ken Day, Manager of UBC’s Alex Fraser Research Forest in Williams Lake, spoke to reporters about a project funded by Natural Resources Canada, studying the San Jose watershed, a body of water that feeds the Williams Lake aquifer and other local community systems, and the decline of water in those systems.
Could climate change be the culprit? Read the Williams Lake Tribune for more information.
