Schaffer Lecture – October 20, 2010

Please join us on October 20th for the Leslie L. Schaffer Lectureship in Forest Sciences.  This year’s speaker is Dr. Peter Ashton, a Charles Bullard Research Pro­fessor of Forestry at Harvard University and a Faculty Fellow at the Center for Internation­al Development, Har­vard University, who will be speaking on the costs and benefits of biodiversity conservation in the tropical rain forest. 

The lecture will take place at 5:15 pm in room 1005 of the UBC Forest Sciences Centre located at 2424 Main Mall, Vancouver.  Reception to follow in the Atrium.

Milestone Reunion - November 9, 2010

Spaces filling up fast! This is a reminder that the Faculty will be holding a reunion in recognition of all Forestry classes that are celebrating a milestone reunion in 2010.  These include:

Class of 1950 – 60th Reunion
Class of 1955 – 55th Reunion
Class of 1960 – 50th Reunion
Class of 1965 – 45th Reunion
Class of 1970 – 40th Reunion
Class of 1975 – 35th Reunion
Class of 1980 – 30th Reunion
Class of 1985 – 25th Reunion
Class of 1990 – 20th Reunion
Class of 1995 – 15th Reunion
Class of 2000 – 10th Reunion

Date: November 9, 2010
Location: Four Seasons Hotel, Vancouver
Registration from 5:00 – 6:00 pm
Dinner served at 6:15 pm

The cost to attend is $25 per person.  Spouses and partners welcome.

CIF Annual Chili Cook-off – November 10, 2010
Come out for an evening of hot chili and cold drinks to meet our current students and learn more about the Canadian Institute of Forestry.  This fun evening kicks off at 5:00 pm in the Atrium of the Forest Sciences Centre, 2424 Main Mall, Vancouver, BC.

$5 for Forestry students
$7 for CIF members
$10 for non-members

Price includes chili, bun and one beverage
$2 for an additional beer or $3 for a glass of wine

Chili cooks also wanted!  We need CIF members to volunteer to cook their favourite chili recipes.  You will be reimbursed for the cost of the ingredients ($50 maximum) and prizes will be awarded for the best batches of chili.

Forestry Alumni Association – Call for board members

Are you a leader?  Do you enjoy forming strategies and putting ideas Forestry Mentoring Programinto action?  Are you proud of your UBC Forestry degree and want the whole world to know?  Then you might be just who we’re looking for.

The Faculty is building an Alumni Association and is looking for talented individuals who can commit energy and enthusiasm to our Board of Directors.  As a board member, you will provide a voice for all Forestry alumni, helping to extend the reach of the Faculty into the local, national and international community.  You will have the opportunity to shape policies, interact with outstanding fellow alumni and help drive the direction of the alumni program.  And if you need yet another reason to join, board membership always looks great on a resume!

Alumni volunteer needed for fall graduation – November 24, 2010

The Faculty is looking for an enthusiastic individual to act as the alumni representative for the 12:30 pm Fall Graduationfall Forestry graduation ceremony.  This is a prestigious opportunity as our selected volunteer will be responsible for welcoming each new graduate into the alumni community and presenting him or her with a graduation gift on behalf of UBC.

The perks of this role include:

  • The opportunity to meet Stephen Toope, UBC President; John Innes, Dean of Forestry; and Sarah Morgan-Silvester, UBC Chancellor.
  • The alumni representative’s name, degree and company will be printed in the graduation brochure.
  • The alumni representative will receive an invitation to attend the Honorary Degree Recipient Reception at the President’s House, where he or she will have the opportunity to hobnob with the likes of Julie Payette, former Chief Astronaut with the Canadian Space Agency and member of the Space Shuttle Discovery and Space Shuttle Endeavour teams, and Louis Nirenberg, exceptional mathematician and committed educator.
