CAWP Open House – October 7, 2010
Did you graduate from the WPP program? Or do you just have an interest in the wood processing field? Either way, please join us on October 7th as the Centre for Advanced Wood Processing (CAWP) holds its Open House from 1pm to 5pm followed by the Co-op Presentation Evening from 6-9pm.

The Open House will run from 1pm to 5pm with various short technical seminars and hands-on demonstrations to inform you about new developments in machinery, software, equipment and supplies related to advanced wood products manufacturing. Staff and faculty will be providing productivity tips and sharing information that will help manufacturers increase competitiveness. They will also have information on training and technical assistance programs available to the industry. Tours of CAWP will be run on the half-hour, led by student volunteers, and will showcase some of the research and industry projects that are carried out in the building.

In the evening the Faculty will be holding its Co-op Presentation Evening from 6pm to 9pm. This is a great opportunity to find out about the projects that students from our B.SC. Wood Products Processing program carried out during their summer co-op work terms and what they could do for your organization. The evening includes a networking opportunity to meet our current co-op students in all years of the program and is always popular with industry visitors who may be considering hiring a student or graduate for either short-term work placements or permanent positions.

There is no charge to attend either the Open House or Co-op Presentations, and a light buffet meal will be available at 5pm. For more information, to RSVP or request a full schedule, please contact cawp@cawp.ubc.ca.

Forestry Mentoring Program Forestry Mentoring Program
The Faculty is looking for individuals interested in becoming mentors to current Forestry students. The Forestry Mentoring Program is in its third year and works to prepare students for successful careers by placing them with alumni who can share their personal experiences and knowledge.

Being a mentor is a rewarding experience and requires a minimal time commitment (just 10-15 hours spread out from September to April). As a mentor, here’s what you can expect:

• Attend the Kick-Off Event to meet your students on Tuesday, October 19, 2010
• Coordinate a minimum of three sessions with your mentees over the course of the academic year. These sessions can be meetings, phone calls, emails or visits to your workplace.
• Complete final evaluations for the students and the program

What do you gain from the program?
• An opportunity to enhance your coaching skills
• A chance to recruit students for volunteer assignments and projects
• An opportunity to expand your job applicant pool

If you are interested in participating, please complete the application form and submit it to Geoff Anderson, Co-op Coordinator, at geoff.anderson@ubc.ca or by fax at 604-822-8645.

Co-op Placements
Are you looking for junior staff members to join your team? Do you have short term projects that would be suitable for students? If so, Forestry’s Co-op Program could be just what you need.

For more information on the program contact our Co-op Coordinators: Linda Dom, or Geoff Anderson.
