The design, implementation and refinement of the MSFM program is guided by the UBC Faculty of Forestry vision statement, by the MSFM program mission statement, and the MSFM program goals and objectives.

UBC Faculty of Forestry Vision

The Faculty of Forestry aspires to be recognized internationally as the institution of choice for outstanding individuals wishing to study all aspects of forest ecosystems, terrestrial landscapes, and the goods and services that they provide. The learning environment extends to the conservation of natural resources, the appropriate utilization of wood and wood products, and the welfare of individuals and communities that depend on or interact with trees and forests. MSFM Program Mission Statement

The MSFM Program provides students with bachelor’s degrees in allied disciplines the opportunity for advanced scholarship and professional growth in the principles and practices of sustainable forest land management.

MSFM Program Goals

The goal of the MSFM program is to train the next generation of forest managers to recognize the importance of and adopt a culture of life-long learning and to have the confidence to play a decision-making role in a wide variety of resource management situations.

MSFM Program Objective

The objective of the MSFM program is to prepare students for careers as forestry professionals in North America and overseas, and set the stage for life-long learning. Graduates of this program will know how to design and implement site and landscape level plans that integrate the environmental, social and economic components of sustainability.

The program is designed to meet the competencies associated with the seven academic standards of the Canadian Federation of Professional Forestry Associations. Those seven standards are:

  1. Tree and stand dynamics
  2. Forest to landscape: structure, function and dynamics
  3. Forest management
  4. Economics and administration of forestry
  5. Leadership skills: communication and critical reasoning
  6. Information acquisition and analysis
  7. Professionalism and ethics.
